The cause of the fire was deemed an accident by the fire fighters and the lodger has only been there for around a month.

It's relatively rare for a fire to be caused by anything other than an accident.

What caused the fire, electrical fault etc etc?

Did you have a different lodger before the current lodger?

The fire was caused by a friend who was in the house on his own and smoking whilst refueling a lighter, obviously not the smartest thing but the insurer hasn't actually mentioned that. The current lodger is the only one we've had.
  • Quite simply, insurers generally take "in good faith" what proposers declare on the proposal forms. It states quite clearly that all details must be correct to the proposer's knowledge and that any misrepresented facts or omission of material facts could result in claims not being paid and/or the policy being cancelled. Anyone living in the house is a material fact and I'm pretty sure any home insurances I have applied for have asked about the usual occupants of the house. As there are three non-disclosures here I don't think he has any chance of getting this paid unfortunately.
