New VED

Right I’m confused (it doesn’t take much believe me):D but I currently pay £20 per year to tax my diesel car. With the new VED and announcement today of it rising I don’t quite understand how much I’ll pay next year? Is it £30 or based on my emissions is it £140:eek: or is there no change? Buy a diesel they said, it’s more beneficial they said - feels like the PPI scandal all over again!

    According to the BBC
Vehicle excise duty for new diesel cars not meeting latest standards to rise by one band in April 2018

So only new vehicles, which has always been the convention.

But that begs the question what vehicles are they talking about?

    Indeed. It makes no sense.

All new vehicles since September 2015 have had to be Euro 6 emission.
Euro 7 is not finalised yet, and likely won't be with us before 2020 at the earliest.

    So...?

I could be wrong but I thought I heard on the radio that a rise in VED was being applied to older diesels that didn't meet the current emission standard (excluding vans, trucks & buses)..... will have to check.

EDIT: After checking it seems I heard wrong!

I don't think you did hear wrong. I'm sure that's what was said on of the programs

    ETA

It looks like it only affects vehicles bought since 1 April 2017 and takes effect from April 2018

I doubt if you can get compo fo having been persuaded to buy a car with higher mpg and lower VED even in these compo-mad times. Of course maybe the whole population should get it for having to put up with all those smelly exhausts.

  • Does this mean the old pre-2017 system won't be rising? I remember they used to rise a few pounds each year after the budget.

I'm still rocking a £30 a year tax vehicle and long may it continue!
