To pay or not

I already know the answer but curious for other views.
So a friend bought some slate for £30. Went to a local company to get the slate cut. Rightly or wrongly NO ONE talked about how much it would cost. The company cutting the slate doesn't state prices on their website and never mentioned how much it would cost for the job. And probably wrongly, the friendly didn't ask what the cost would be.
Anyway, all now cut. The company have had the slate for 2 weeks and charged £54 inc VAT for the work. Logic would say you have to pay this, yes they probably should of said the price but not paying is like asking a builder to do work without a quote then not paying once the work is done.
However, you could then argue that builder should be required to give a quote otherwise they could convince old people they need work doing and make up massive charges at the end of the job.
So the question is. If you suggested to the company "keep the slate and use it to recover your costs" can they refuse and take it to court, even if they have no details for you?
I'd say pay it and take it as a "I made a mistake by not asking how much it would cost but I won't ever use them again for not volunteering a quote in the first place".

Ok, so you already know the answer
Firstly did the slate cutting company approach you to cut your friends slate? No
You guys went there requiring a service, slate cutting! So as a consumer he needs to know how much it’s gonna be to Pay for this! He should have requested this.
Once the work was complete your friend should pay for the service and put it down to lessons learned as you have stated, not try and pull a fast one.
When you provide a paying service to someone you expect to be paid.
He wouldn’t go to a barber shop, get a haircut and advise the barber to reuse the hair somehow to offset the cost...
He should act fairly.0 -
They should pay. Also, the cost of the slate itself has no bearing on the cost of the work to cut it.0

I am an old person and deffinately more savvy. Anyway £54 does not seem to expensive for the use of their very expensive cutting machine.0 -
I’d be interested to know how much your friend thinks he should have paid and how he came to that calculation0

Never mind, he paid.0
