    Looks like it's designed to 'tighten' into something, probably with pre-drilled holes.

    Are they some screws you've bought, or screws supplied with self assembly furniture (or something)?

    I note the thread is also different (with small saw-like) pointy bits or 'serrations'?

    Some sort of premium quality, fast thread, self tappers? :)

    I missed pozi screws coming in so thought I'd missed another advancement.

    I think that's just poor quality rather than intentional.

    The serrations, 'spiral' and the 'bars' under the countersunk head (only just visible) are all design features meant to reduce the risk of the screw self-loosening. They all give more 'bite' into the wood and resist rotation.

    Whether or not you need all those features is up to you of course ;)
