Tax codes for 2nd job?

  • Employers electronically notify HMRC of any changes in their staff employment. It all happens fairly quickly these days.

Employment agency said they most certainly do still use P46 and it was down to my wife to manually notify HMRC about her second employment with the Agency.

Isn't that a contradiction...HMRC must know of her employment with the agency as she is on emergency tax .
  • Employment agencies are experts at finding people work but are clearly not tax experts.

If your wife looks at her personal tax account on gov.uk she will be able to check which employers have sent payment details to HMRC since April 2017.

Just because the agency is using a particular tax code doesn't mean it has come from HMRC. The whole purpose of the new starter form/checklist is so employers know what tax code to use without having to contact HMRC before they pay someone.
