Tax codes for 2nd job?

Options
How does this work because, obviously, 2nd job doesn't know how much you earn in 1st job?

Tax code 0T Noncum - is that right?

  • Ah. Seems to be 20% on the lot with no allowances.

But what about NI? Or is that dependent on a minimum for each employment?

HMRC do know about both jobs and they dish out the codes.

    NI is per job.
  • Hope the OP doesn't mind me asking here rather start a new thread on same subject.

Wife works 16 hrs in reqular job..earns well under her tax allowance...just started doing odd shifts for agency, will second job be emergency tax or set rate as second job.

Even with second job..still wont earn her tax free allowance.

There is no such thing as a set tax rate for a second job. It's possible that she will be put on BR for the second job until her employer get a proper coding.

Assuming a P46 should be filled out...agency hasn't mentioned it.

They won't have mentioned P46 as it was scrapped a few years ago.

Emergency tax code means you can earn about £220/week without paying any tax.

There is now a "new starter" declaration (which is very similar to a P46) and the employer decides on the initial tax code based on how the declaration is completed.

If your wife has spare allowances from her current job she should get an updated tax code for the new job soon after the new employer pays her for the first time. If need be she can ask HMRC to split her allowances between jobs as it suits her.

If she has already applied for Marriage Allowance this will affect the allowances available.

Thank you that's most helpful...will let her know.

Shows how out of date i am with Tax...wasn't aware the P46 was done away with.

So what happens if main job ends and 2nd job becomes only job. LEt HMRC know I guess?
  • Employers electronically notify HMRC of any changes in their staff employment. It all happens fairly quickly these days.
  • So no need to speak to HMRC now that 2nd job is only job?
