Wall light - old wire issue

I've tried to replace 2 wall lights in my living room. First went on fine but the second the wires don't reach the connection in the light.
Could this be as easy as buying wire and electrical tape, or do I need to get someone in?

NOT tape !!
That's an unsafe bodge.
Use something like this............

And before somebody shoots me down in flames take all the usual precautions.

Do these extend the wires? Looking at this I found SpliceLine - would they not be better suited?Just have a little faith0 -
Have you tried pulling the wires ... VERY GENTLY !!! Quite often there'll be a little bit of play in the cable, if it's only an inch or 2 short you may be lucky. I'll emphasise again - be very gentle. If it doesn't move very easily, and you try to pull too hard, you could well end up causing some very expensive damage further back in the circuit.0
