My son just won £25 on the premium Bonds and has received a warrant from them which is the same as cheque basically.
I can't see any such semi-government departments and IT systems being upgraded to do bank-bank transfer anytime soon so some kind of cheque facility will be required for a long time yet.
As for personal cheques, we still use them for a couple of people we pay on a fiarly regular basis. One small business used to take card payments but dropped them on the grounds of cost and is now cash / cheque only, as is our local Chinese Takeaway.
Last use is to pay / receive money from in-laws who wouldn't touch online banking with a bargepole.0 -

Any earnings (I think winnings is too strong a term for a return on premium bonds) I receive is credited straight to my bank account, whilst it's nice to receive your 'winnings' in the post it's more hassle to actually get around to paying them in.
There is also the option of reinvesting the winnings if you haven't maxed them out.0 -

Thanks for that, hadn't realsied they could bank transfer (as we don't have any PBs), I'll tell him.
We had to explain the concept of paper "cheque" means manual paying in to him :j.
Got worse when we said, "no, we can't pay it into our account and transfer the money to you".0
