Natwest Reward Silver never shutting down

We opened an account as we was going to start saving for a house. Since opening the account we became homeless but charges was on the account originally, We spoke to the debt management team as the amount on the account was around £300. They said we pay £90 they will wipe the rest of the account so we payed the £90 and they wiped the rest so we asked them to shut down the account. The account was not shut down, We have asked them more than 4 times to close the account when the balance was at 0 on numerous occasions, we even went into the bank and signed paper saying that we wish for the account to be closed and the bank said that they will sort this for us but now the debt is around £300 once again and they are refusing to close it and stating we need to pay the outstanding debt. We requested for this account to be closed around July 2016 which was not done to our original request, this is causing us stress and financial hardship and our credit rating is in shatters because of this.

We want them to shut down the account, We have paid them no end to get it to 0 to shut it down but they do not and they keep adding charges! its an endless circle

any advice would be appreciated

  • Raise a formal complaint with the bank.
Go to their website to see how to do this?
  • We have made a complaint this is one of the times it went back to 0 - then it never got closed, Now all we get when we phone even when we explain to them we tried closing before and you guys have not closed it.

"We wavered fees previously as a good will, We can not do this no more. To get the balance to 0 you will need to pay in full"
  • The Financial Ombudsman is the next course then, if you have already complained direct to the bank.

    All the best.
  • Just as I though, Unfortunate as it is. Thank you both for assistance.
  • How did the balance on the account go from £nil to a debt of £300 - was it just the bank's fees and interest charged or did you spend money you didn't have?

If the latter then I can see the bank's point of view.
