    Whats it like being perfect?

Never been perfect but what 16 year old or younger looks over 25?

think you're being a bit sanctimonious.
Surely we all had that friend at school that had no trouble getting served at the pub from when they were 13.
On the other hand I was still occasionally getting carded when I was well into my 30's , mostly it just made me laugh but it could be annoying
Amd you don't know the OP served a 16 y.o - could have been someone that was 17 & 364 days old , would still have fallen foul of the law
If you work in a busy shop and have hundreds of customers the occasional one is bound to slip past you , unless you card everyone not on a zimmer. And that might not do much for customer relations

In our area, the local police force are repeated posting a photograph on their Facebook page of a 14 year old girl who regularly goes missing, with appeals to help find her.

Every time they post the photograph, there are floods of posts all saying "she's never 14", or "she looks 25 at least". (They probably should try and find a better picture of her looking more like her actual age.)

You are very naive if you honestly think that teenage girls (maybe less so with teenage boys who tend not to wear make up) can't make themselves look way way WAY older than their years.

No, not naive. Test purchasers used by the Police are underage and generally look no older than their real age, normally younger.

Test purchasers used internally by major retailers and Camelot are of legal age but normally within months of their last birthday and never look anything like 25 or plastered in make up.

My 13 year old niece was repeatedly mistaken for her 25 year old aunt at my wedding, my younger sister is married with a baby for the record. We actually gave the venue a photo of her in case she tried to get wide and buy alcohol.
  • Easier said than done, ever dealt with an angry 50 year old buying wine for sunday dinner and you refuse to serve her without ID...
Those are the best ones, as the entitled rage builds.

"There's no point getting angry at me because you're unable to prove your age, miss"

In answer to your question on how I could get the age so wrong, I was serving a gentleman after the incident once I had done my test, quite tall, asked for lottery, asked for I.D as thought not getting caught out, colleague waiting to be served goes, its daft isn't it, he's clearly over 25.....looked at i.d he had not long turned 17 and at a guess I would have put him at 22/23 so not everyone looks the age they should be!

When I was in the US on holiday the local supermarket asked for proof of ID from everyone buying alcohol. I was a bit taken aback, since I'm well over 60, but soon got used to it. I assume they had once been done for selling to minors, and this was the only foolproof method to avoid problems in the future.

If it was a trading standards test purchase you would have found out about it straight after it happened, probably escorted from your till by management too and would have been looking at a fine and criminal record never mind the sack.

Company internal test purchases are done by people who will be of legal age. Fail these and you are usually looking at a disciplinary hearing which would usually result in a warning and retraining for first offence. Internal test purchases are very dubious as technically no laws were broken.
