When do I tell HMRC about my new job?

Hello All

I've just accepted a new job which starts in January.:j

When's the best time to tell tax credits? I know they say as soon as possible, but I don't know exactly what my new income will be until I've had my first pay packet, which will be approx. one month after I start there.

I'm not trying to dodge telling them, I just don't want to ring them twice! (and sit in their interminable queues....).

Please can someone advise.

Thanks
M

Are you currently claming tax credits or not?

If so you can tell them when you like (personally I'd wait until until you start the new job if it pays more) but realistically the way the system works is after the end of this tax year in April 2018 at some point up until July 2018 you then declare what you earned this tax year and they change the amounts accordingly. For those first three or four months its literally a guess amount they'd pay you on.
