When to start claim when being made redundant

Hi I will be made redundant from my job on January 5th 2018.
Since having spinal surgery, and slight mobility problems, I am finding it difficult to find another job.
I see my consultant at the end of December, I may need another operation.
Do I wait till jan to try and claim esa? Or after my redundancy pay runs out?
I'm currently working 20 hours a week (reduced from 32) with a drs fit note, as full sick pay has run out.
Many thanks Alison
