IMO they need to step up the security and identity checks for allowing fake accounts to be set up. they're not doing enough to protect people in these situations0 -
I dont think so. Also are you suppose to ask tradesmen now what email account they have and do you have insurance to cover cyber crime?
Its all been referred to the cyber crime police dept in London
What are you talking about? Insurance for cyber crime?? Does your builder have insurance????
If they do, request the details from the builder and contact the insurance company.0 -

Because standard public liability insurance usually does not cover cyber crime.
Although I have been reading up on this to make sure my own business is protected and it could be possible that the builder is liable for a data breach.
If his email was hacked and he had inadequate protection of client's data and the clients details were used to fraudulently extract money the builder could be in trouble. Whether the in built encryption in the web based email system would be classed as adequate protection is tricky. Might be worth the OP talking to someone at the Information Commission or whatever they are called.0 -

This is what I first thought after the scam happened, but then speaking to Citizens Advice it made me think other wise0 -

Forget Citizens Advice, from what I've heard they are next to useless. Go straight to the Information Commissioners Office

By the way, ignore the less helpful posts. It is sad that some people are totally incapable of offering constructive advice and just seem to enjoy sniping at other people.

Doesn't affect the OP, if the builder is insured, the OP can still claim. It's up to the insurance company to refuse to indemnify. The can pay out and pursue the builder.
It's unreasonable for a client to know exactly what is and what is not covered on an liability policy.0 -

Why doesn’t the op claim on his home insurance then?0
