We have had home insurance with the same company since we moved here almost six years ago. We had to make a claim within the first few months, so because of that we have not really been able to shop around each year and look at moving insurers. (Because they always ask have you had a claim in the last five years).
Now the claim is over 5 years ago I would like to compare the market etc. as I think we may be paying over the odds. The current policy runs out on Thursday I think and we have heard absolutely nothing from the insurer. No letters, no emails, nothing in the spam folder. In previous years I think I remember getting letters with the projected amount for the next year etc. They last took money in late October.
Is this par for the course now, maybe deliberate so that customers don't have time to shop around and will auto renew by default? Does anyone know?

No reason not to do your shopping round now (or earlier - that's spilt milk now though)
Ring them to see what the renewal is going to be in case it's cheaper than your chosen company before you buy!0 -
Thanks, yes I will be asking them the renewal price, but hopefully we can get a better deal.
But is it common to not hear from a company with details of your renewal quotation? Or have they just made a mistake?0 -
common yes, in the hope you auto renew and get ripped off"It is prudent when shopping for something important, not to limit yourself to Pound land/Estate Agents"

I have always received a renewal quote.
Call the insurer / online chat them to see what the renewal price is? Have you always got a renewal quote in the post? If not, then perhaps you're with one that does things via an online portal?0 -
They did use to send a renewal letter in the post, but come to think of it, I don't believe we had a letter in the post last year, either. And I couldn't log into my account.
Anyway it's good news for me, as I phoned the insurer today and cancelled (they wanted about £280) and got a new insurer via a comparison website for only £122 for gold cover!0 -
Did you cancel, or say you didn't want to renew as they are 2 different things?0
 -
Well technically cancelled, as it turned out the renewal date was actually today, not Thursday as I thought. They said there would be no charges for the cancellation though.0
