New plaster peeling off when painted

Needed some plastering work doing in my attic and got my brother in law to do it - he does a lot of decorating work but isn't a specialist plasterer (and he did it for free).
I left the plaster a week or so to dry and painted over with some watered down emulsion. I come back the next day and some parts of the plaster have come away from the wall. The parts the are affected seem to be where a very thin layer of plaster lies over the previously-existing plasterboard. I suspect that the thin part of plaster is absorbing some moisture from the paint and then isn't strong enough to stick to the wall (but I could be wrong).
I've been hacking off the peeling plaster and repainting, and have gone through this a few times. Is there something else I can do to remedy?

Yeah, that article suggests pva BEFORE plastering. And, although opinions differ on the subject, I see a lot of people saying you shouldn't do the pva thing on top of the plaster.0 -
You'll need to remove the loose stuff, fill and reprint if you want a half decent finish.
What paint was on the wall before he started?0 -
No point in applying PVA now.
Did he PVA over the old surfaces before plastering? If not then that might explain your issues.
Short of having it replastered by somebody who knows what they are doing, all you can really do is remove all loose plaster and fill it with a decent filler, give it another mist coat and hope for the best! How successful this will be depends on how much loose plaster comes off.0 -
Ok. I had a look tonight and my last coat seems to have stayed on. I think I'm going to crack on with the next coat and hope for the best!0

There's a good chance more will come off if you do that.0 -

To clarify, I removed the loose stuff before my last coat. Reckon that'll be all right?0 -

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on how much came off and whether it's back to solid plaster.

I don't think so. Are they things that plaster wouldn't properly adhere to?0
