Natwest more charges

I closed my natwest account on 13th Sept they gave me £1 odd which was left in the account and was told now it is now closed as I requested....Low and behold returned from holiday and my child benefit was paid to them on the 14th sept they sent me a cheque for £30 something they have taken £35 for unpaid charges!!!
are they allowed to take child benefit money ?
I closed the account day before so were they legally entitled to accept that extra payment?
any help please..
