council bungalow old fireplace

hi I moved into a council property and it has an old fireplace which is pretty big, its boarded up with a vent in. council have said that its gotta stay so wondered if anyone had any ideas on what I can do with it. the old tiles have been painted and some tile stickers put on but still doesn't look great. any ideas would be great, thanks. the hearth sticks out quite a bit and I have already caught my toes on it when walking by.
