council bungalow old fireplace

hi I moved into a council property and it has an old fireplace which is pretty big, its boarded up with a vent in. council have said that its gotta stay so wondered if anyone had any ideas on what I can do with it. the old tiles have been painted and some tile stickers put on but still doesn't look great. any ideas would be great, thanks. the hearth sticks out quite a bit and I have already caught my toes on it when walking by.[IMG]file:///C:/Users/clair/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/INetCache/IE/JWCY4WI3/20171119_191851.webp[/IMG]

That link to your image isn't going to go anywhere I'm afraid...
If the fireplace is boarded over and you have no intention of reinstating the fire, the hearth could be removed... Assuming of course, the property isn't listed.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

My council would have removed that and left you with a chimney breast with the vent, and probably a bit of mismatched flooring where the hearth was. Mainly to discourage any reusing of the fire. Have you asked to pay for the work your self using your own tradesman? What you need is the tenants alterations form from your council ( google it) to apply.0

Hmm - that's going to limit your choices of decor!
If the Council won't let you remove the fireplace, then they probably won't let you move the matching hearth, either - so boxing it in would be a problem.
Do your neighbours have these monstrosities as well? What have they done with them?0 -
Tell the council that the hearth could be a health hazard and how the children and elderly can trip over it. I am sure they will take it seriously then.
