Is It Worth Getting Vista?

Options
What are your guys thoughts on getting windows Vista?
My system is very powerful and will run it without a problem.
Have the early bugs been sorted out now and is it stable?

There weren't really any early bugs, and it has always been stable.

The main issue is with older hardware and software being compatible. A lot of manufacturers haven't released drivers for older hardware, so as long as you don't have any older software/hardware you plan on using you should be fine.

It's not always necessary to buy it. XP is generally fine for most people, although if you can get Vista for a good price it's worth upgrading to. I'd recommend getting the Premium version.

Vista is fine, it's been stable since the day it was released and despite the doom mongers it has had few bugs. Just avoid Home Basic, for home use either get Home Premium or the ulitmate edition (although that is pricey).

It's worth checking all of your peripherals etc. will work with it before buying it. You can also download the upgrade advisor to check your PC is OK to run it.

It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

If you 'upgrade' to Vista in what way will it benefit you? I think that's what you need to ask yourself

Vista takes a bit of getting used to but there are lots of little touches in Vista that I really miss in XP.

HOWEVER on like for like hardware, Vista will run a bit slower as it has more features but this has been the same for any new version of Windows since year dot.

So, Vista is fine to use but unless you've fairly up to date hardware, stick with XP and keep the speed.

I have an interest in this too. Especially as i MAY have to buy a new PC (laptop) in the near future.

Does vista offer any real advantages for an average Pc user over Windows XP? All i have heard so far is that Vista probably won't run most of the unofficial stuff i currently use on XP.

What do you mean by unofficial? Vista's meant to be backwards compatible with XP designed software. Won't work for everything but it should for the majority.

Well often updates can restrict your freedom. For example, i had to reformat my HD to get rid of the awful Windows Service Pack 2 (which basically just froze my ability to mp3 share etc. etc.), similarly i had to roll back to Msn messenger 7.0 after the forced upgrade to Windows Live (which did nothing but freeze my browser and again block all the add-ons i was using on 8.2).

So i guess Windows Vista might do something similar, and if there are no major advantages to it, then i have to ask, what is the point, if any???

If you don't have XP SP2, couldn't it be that these problems with updates were simply presenting symptoms of something underlying your pc. Without SP2 your pc is far more likely to be a zombie.
