Just thought I'd give an update on this for anyone interested or anyone in the future who has the same problem!
Eventually got someone from Thames Water round this morning, who tested the water and confirmed that it was tap water (by the presence of chlorine) and wasn't waste water (no ammonia). He listened to all our pipes, and no issues there which was a great relief!
It is indeed coming from the BT underground junction, it was eventually located some way up the street and found to be full of water, due to a leaking water mains nearby.
So that's logged in to be fixed sometime this week. Just hope they hurry up before the water damages my brickwork
