MOT fail - Anyone any idea of an estimate cost for this?

So I just had my car MOT'd today and it failed :(
These are the things it failed on:
001 Parking brake: efficiency below requirements [3.7.B.7]
002 Rear parking brake recording little or no effort Nearside [3.7.B.6a]
003 Rear parking brake recording little or no effort Offside [3.7.B.6a]
(I was told that these three were likely to be caused by the same thing. They think it is possibly the cable but obviously couldn't be sure without looking at it properly.)
004 Anti-roll bar linkage ball joint dust cover excessively damaged so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt Nearside Front [2.4.G.2]
005 Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded Nearside Front [5.2.6]
006 Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded Nearside Rear [2.4.A.3]
007 Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded Offside Rear [2.4.A.3]

I just wondered if anyone had an estimate on the price on all or any of these jobs? Trying to figure out if its worth just scrapping it or having the work done.
I have a Kia Picanto 2005 :)

It's scrap I'm afraid, unless you want to pay more than the car's worth to have it welded.

On a more positive note it's a good time of year to pick up a bargain.

"kia have better build quality because they are willing to stand by their products and offer 7 year guarantee"

ridiculous the amount of corrosion. never had any corrosion on my 2002 vw golf

as above uneconomical repair unless you know how to weld
  • The brakes and antiroll bar linkage are pennies if you can do it yourself. The welding will cost a packet plus you will need to do more next year most likely.

I presume you already knew the handbrake didn't do anything, right?

1 is telling you it doesn't do enough.
2 and 3 are telling you each of the two wheels don't do much individually. It could be a variety of causes - shoes, cables, rear cylinders leaking. Since it didn't fail on the footbrake, I'd be looking at the actuation side - cables have to be high on the list. But what'll they find inside the rear drums when they open 'em up?
004 Anti-roll bar linkage ball joint dust cover excessively damaged so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt Nearside Front [2.4.G.2]

    Quick, easy and cheap.
005 Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded Nearside Front [5.2.6]
006 Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded Nearside Rear [2.4.A.3]
007 Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded Offside Rear [2.4.A.3]

5 and 6 could be the same area - part of the sill (presumably) rotten within 30cm of both suspension mount and seatbelt. On a Picanto, there's not much distance between the two. Or it could be two areas.

Frankly, on something so generic and low-value, I'd be lobbing it.

The value of a car like yours in good condition is around £800/£1,000

So if you can get it repaired for less, I would say yes get it done, get a couple of quotes.

How much for one in the early stages of terminal structural rot, even patched enough for a ticket?

I'm all for running cars until they're fit for the scrap yard and repairing them even if its four figures because it saves you money.

However when it starts to get to structural body rot then that is a vehicle that has reached the end of its life because other parts won't be far behind and the structure of the car is compromised. You can patch it up but its the start of a game of rust whack a mole.

Brakes are going to be at worst £150 for a replacement caliper. The welding could be £50, it could be £250 - without seeing the car we can't say because we don't know how much of the interior needs to be stripped away to make it safe to weld without setting the car on fire.

Caliper? On the back of a dozen-year-old Picanto?

AS already said, once the tin worm is in the structural bits, it's time to wave goodbye.
You'll be fighting a losing battle.
    Get another car.

Just looking at the MOT history of my last car. I had the same welding done and it lasted for at least 7 years after that. This is all about finding a nice little back street garage that will work for reasonable pay. The welding doesn't cost anything - just time. The place I went to had a man who wore a hat like a tea cosy. He did all the welding. For welding they wouldn't give a fixed quote - just a worst case scenario and then charge you less. Those places are so hard to find now - but if you can find one you'll be sorted.
