I think the OP is suggesting claiming the car itself was driving with "driver assist", rather than naming another person
He can try if he likes, but even bearing in mind it's simply gap-keeping cruise, rather than even semi-autonomy, he might wish to remember that full autonomy is not (yet?) legal on British roads - so he'd be effectively admitting Driving Without Due Care And Attention at the very minimum. I'd go so far as to suggest it fitted the "well below the standard" test to be Dangerous Driving.

Yes that's true - you set it to 70mph (as in my case) and it just drives --- if a car pulls in front doing 65 the Volvo adjusts - it steers, lane keeps and cruises - I just don't have the gumption to use this as a defence. BUT I am tempted - even just for the head lines I'm sure this would attract - Cant confirm or deny if I was the tabloid informer ;-)

So basically the car was steering, accelerating and braking automatically and the only thing you had to do was make sure the speed was set correctly but failed at that one task. But somehow it's the cars fault that you don't understand basic road signs?.

Yes I can imagine the headlines now maybe something like "Dipsy driver blames car for speeding because it didn't slow down when speed limits changed".

I don't know about the cruise control/speed limiter on your car, OP, but on my Tucson there is a handy little switch on the steering wheel control, which lets me immediately take these actions: either flick off the cruise/limiter, slow it to a lesser speed with a number of flicks (and it remains at that speed until I take another action) - OR brake, in which case the cruise/limiter switches off, but remains lit waiting for a further setting.

Please though, listen to the pleas from myself and others: if you intend to oppose this NIP, let us know the date, time and venue when your case is heard. I need a good laugh...
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
