TSB switching advice direct debit

Hi there everyone,

I was planning to switch to TSB to get the 130£ and possible 5£+5£/month reward. In order to get the 130£, the T&Cs list the following condition:
As part of the switch, transfer all active credits and debits which must include a minimum of 2 active Direct Debits from your old account and close it (this is called a full switch);

I have a couple of questions:

1. Does Paypal (set up and listed as an active direct debit with my current account) count as an active direct debit for TSB? Will it be valid for the switch? Note: I haven't used it monthly, only when needed.

2. If I set up a direct debit with one or two charities (depending on Paypal), will they be valid for the switching bonus even if they haven't paid out yet? I know that a direct debit can be considered active even without the first payment, but TSB might have a different opinion.. Does anybody have any experience with this? Would it be safer to wait for the first payment to happen and then switch? The only issue is that the starting date for many of the charities I considered would be on the 15th of December, and the offer is valid if you switch before the 22nd, which puts me in a borderline position.

Any help will be much appreciated!

  • TSB count active as a direct debit that has been taken during the last 13 months, so as long as you have used PayPal in the last 13 months they would work. When I switched to them from TSB I had one direct debit that I'd set up on my old account that hadn't been taken until after the switch but I had plenty so it wasn't needed to make up the numbers.

    Perfect, thank you very much!

    Anybody else knows if a newly set up DD (e.g. not paid yet) will be valid for the switch?
