Painting Extractor Fan Boxing (Plywood)

We have had a extractor fan boxing unit made in plywood for our new kitchen by the kitchen company, which was installed yesterday.
Due to the delay/short notice from the kitchen company at making the boxing, we had to find a decorator to paint it this weekend, prior to our worktops being installed in our kitchen for this coming Monday.
We found a decorator last night (decorator had a last minute cancellation and charged extra for working Saturday) and agreed for him to start this morning.
He provided all the materials - Primer, Flexible Chauk, tape etc
He bought the paint, Layland Trade Satin wood (same brand as our ceiling paint), which we had to pay for as well.
The decorator undercoated the boxing once, then sanded some areas down and put two coats of paint on.
He was here from 9am - 12pm - 3hrs.
The finished job unfortunately is not what we were hoping for and simply looks wrong.
The finish is too shiny and the you can lines of the wood through the paint. The filler around all the edges is also very visible...
The decorator at the start of the job did say ideally it should have been completed with plaster board and while it wont look 100% like the ceilings, it would be a good finish.
At the end of job he said he would have no issue with this finish at his own home.
If we are at a distance and no lights are on near the boxing, it looks ok however there are lights near it and when on, just shows up the wood lines and sheen!
Please see attached pictures - Is this what we should be expected or should we ask him to return to remedy?

Images are smallish and don't magnify, but it looks OK to me too.0

The only way to make it really blend in with the ceiling would have been to give it a skim of the same plaster/artex first.0
