Hi All,

My son is after a new laptop that he can use for gaming as well as his school work. He has sold his entire lego collection and other toys and saved and we are going to put some money towards it for Christmas.

Trouble is I'm not very tech savvy so wouldn't mind some advice please.

Where we currently are is stuck between the below models - partly because I've always had good experiences with PC World / Currys and partly fear factor of going elsewhere.....

If anyone has any views or ideas they would be more than welcome and appreciated as to which is the best of the below models or if there is anything better elsewhere.

He needs a laptop rather than a desktop so it is portable and has a maximum of £850 to spend. Not a massive budget for a gaming laptop I know but an awful lot of money to us!

Many thanks for any input and advice,

Gordon. :-)

The top and bottom ones are the only ones you should consider. The second one is an older generation graphics card plus Acer depreciate like hell and the third one isn't a gaming one at all and whilst fine for everything else would struggle with games. The top one is the better of the two. Asus ROG (Republic Of Gamers) line are a premium line of gaming machines/components and apart from the fact it'll perform better than the HP due to the SSD, as a ROG brand it'll be worth more when you come to sell it.

The only other brand I'd consider which is not at Currys is Razer gaming laptops but you'll be paying a whole lot more.

To be honest you would be wasting money at Curry's for high end laptops - it's not their speciality. They are more "middle market" laptop purveyors. I should know - I do contract work for them and John Lewis.

As for what you want, it's a bit much to be splashing that on a kids laptop when they're hardly going to be playing the more graphics intensive (aka gory, adult content) games. They'll probably be into Roblox or SIMS instead.

I think you would be better placed getting yourself a DELL i5 with dedicated card instead Sure it may not look the part of a "cool system". But the keys, build and screen will be much better all round. Plus it will be easier on your budget, decent customer service and the machines are more rugged.

But if you really want to buy budget gaming laptops then maybe go for second hand Origin, Razer, or Alienware models. If you want to buy new then MSI or Gigabyte give bang for buck. HP don't don't any good gaming laptops.
