M&S store card

My wife (and I) were refused an M&S store card, but of course weren't told why. On checking my Experian score through MSE Credit Club, they were unable to verify my identity, (no idea why, they won't tell me) so I couldn't find out that way. I'd forgotten that my wife also had an account. I've just checked it and she has a 973 score. However. Because we live quite simply, the money we could enter as income was quite low. WE WERE NOT ASKED ABOUT OUR CAPITAL, which is quite high. We just draw what we need. (We only wanted some of the perks, not the credit). This leaves us in limbo. It may mean we cannot change our Bank account. Experian and quite possibly others have some control over our finances. I have to say that I'm not happy about it!:mad:

You have answered your own question. You were declined due to low income. Capital cannot be taken into consideration.
Are you saying that Experian wouldn't tell you why they couldn't verify your identity or why you were declined? If the former, surely they advised you how to proceed in such a case to obtain your credit report. If the latter, of course they couldn't. They didn't decline you; M&S did!
I don't think store cards can be issued as joint accounts any more than a credit card can. Only one of you would have applied and asked for an additional card for the other. I assume it was your wife.
You complain that you WERE NOT ASKED ABOUT YOUR CAPITAL and appear somewhat annoyed. I have never ever seen a credit or store card application or loan application which asks about capital. Have you?
I don't really understand what 'control' you believe that Experian and these unnamed others have over your finances. Could you perhaps clarify?

you were not told why but why do you assume that it is related to some information Experian have rather than your situation does not fit into M&S criteria to lend money to? (e.g. income to loan ratio?)

Why do you think they would ask about capital. Capital isn’t going to pay the debt off

Ooh. Just one point short for the M&S card.

    So near, yet so far...

And if they had applied a day later, in the afternoon, everything would have been fine.

Does the M&S store card still exist? Searching M&S's website for 'store card' goes straight to an M&S Bank webpage about credit cards, bank accounts and savings.

In 2003 M&S was rapped over the knuckles for aggressively swapping customers from its store card to its credit card.

Their credit card perks don't seem to be anything special.

They offer vouchers based on spend: 1% for spending at M&S; 0.2% for spending elsewhere.

Prepaid card Pockit offers 6% cashback on spending at M&S and Aqua, which is aimed at those with less than a perfect credit history, offers 0.5% cashback on spending at M&S and elsewhere.
  • I'd suggest the original poster buy one (or more) shares in M&S since they have capital. They'll then be entitled to all the shareholders perks and vouchers instead. I don't think they actually need or want the credit card, which is a good reason for the application to be turned down!
