a day trip to Malacca (Melaka) is a good idea. lots of beautiful old buildings an full of history. It is about a 3 hour drive from SIngapore and on the coast. It was previously occupied by the Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, and British, so lots and lots of history there.
Extremely good food too. A must try is the pork satay (can't really get it anywhere else, and much tastier than chicken), and the ball chicken rice (the rice is shaped into balls, and somehow much tastier).
Lots of shopping in Malacca and it is much cheaper than Singapore. Singaporeans travel to Johor Bahru and Malacca to shop.
PS. Did you know that you can pre-book the emergency exit seats with Singapore Ailines? More legroom. call them as far in advance as you can to secure the seatsNot buying clothes for a year - it's liberating!0
