refused cashback cards

Really fed up now – decided I’d been lazy and should do something about my credit card. We’ve had Barclaycard credit card for years, use it for everything and have always paid off the monthly balance. Applied for Capital One cash back card and were refused. We applied in husbands name as I’m a self employed childminder and don’t have a huge income - so we checked his credit rating and found no problems. We then applied for the Abbey cash back card and found out this morning this has also been refused!! Is there anywhere to go from here or do we just accept we are not going to get anything back from credit cards.

so we checked his credit rating and found no problems

Who did you check it with?
There are 3 credit reference agencies in the UK

    Experian
    Equifax
    Call Credit

You need to check all 3.

All can be ontained for free or (if you have done trials before) for the £2 statutory fee (don't pay for more expensive on-line products).

If there are still problems then it may be that you don't fit their profile for a target customer.

  • Went with Experian. Didn't expect to find anything because we've no loans and never had any problems.

I can think of a number of things that could be a problem

    1) It could be lack of credit history as you say you have one card only (any mortgage?). If it's a lack of history then you could try your own bank as they have history on you.

    2) It could be a mistake on Equifax for example. There could be mistakes on the other reports which is why you need to check all 3.

    3) A recent spate of applications could be putting of new lenders. The only thing you can do herre is wait for some of your searches to "drop off".

    4) Could just be that you don't have enough income and don't fit their profile. Credit isn't a right and it's up to them whether they decide to give you a card or not.

I would advise you to get ALL the reports.
    Try https://www.annualcreditreport.co.uk (free)
This will help to identify any problems (with colour).

If you think you don't have enough credit history then build it up gradually starting with a credit card from your bank.

Stop applying and wait for old searches to drop off after 1 year.

Sorry it's not going to be quick, but you can improve it.
