Study and living in USA

Hi,
I am going to the USA for 6 months, as part of my university degree. Does anyone know the most cost effective way to live and pay for everyday purchases while there? Is there a bank in the UK linked to one in America and should I open an account there?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Unless you are going to be receiving an income in USD while you are there, I don't see why you need a US bank account for a six month stay.

You need a credit card with no loading fee for non sterling transactions, and a means of getting cash without a loading fee.

Many UK banks have a US presence. Who do you currently bank with?
