I think you have answered my question.
Let's see if I can pick up a Mondeo.
It was more to illustrate that a well maintained vehicle can do daft mileage without a load of bills. Plenty of them about but experience has taught me that buying at 2/3 years old only having one or two owners, having done at least 10,000 miles a year and preferably more, and a fully stamped up service book with main dealer service history and from the point where you buy it looking after it properly is a fairly good guarantee it'll happily do lots of mileage and last you several years.
Mondeos and cars like them so Insignias, BMW 3/5 series, the Volvo mentioned and similar sized cars like high mileage long journeys, not pottering around on the school run. People who bought them and did nothing but run around town tended to find injectors, DPF filters and DMF flywheels failing because they bought the wrong car for the type of journey they were doing. It is more about matching the vehicle to the type of use it'll have than which one you buy.A good start is buying a car that's reliable to start with - oh, and check if the engine has a chain cam, that'll save you £300+ as no cam belt change costs.
I had the cambelt, cambelt tensioner, water pump (might as well do it at the same time), auxiliary drive belts and cooland changed on my Mondeo at 120,000 miles and it cost me £350 for the lot for both parts and labour. Over 120,000 miles that is a cost of 0.2 pence per mile. Without changing the water pump and coolant it would probably have been £100 cheaper.Inner_Zone wrote: »The purchaser needs to research, BMW, Mazda and Vauxhall all are know for chain issues on certain engines and no doubt there are others also.
One wonders how much of that is down to people getting a vehicle that is supposed to be a mile muncher and using it to just potter around town to drop the kids off and pick them up from school and go to Asda given how many of them are out there doing starship mileage as rep mobiles without suffering the issues. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Thanks for the reply.
Have you had to have any major repair work done?
I understand you can get a car that does +200K miles. But I'm sure with this comes high levels of expense.
For me, I want the cheapest monthly outgoing.
None. I've never had any 'major repair work' on any of my cars, and I've had plenty with 150K+ on, and they mostly do about 18K a year. I normally gave them a year and a bit then get bored.0
