    Thanks for the feedback guys.

No, not gambling related. Had the cash available at the time, but as months went by my mental health deteriorated (went into a complete shell at home - it will be familiar to those who've experienced it).
In hindsight I wish the store had pressed harder for me to complete the purchase or given me some form of ultimatum. Financial situation has worsened & mental health not improved - trust me it's taken some effort to contact the store & to enter a post on here.
Still feel it's tough to have the total deposit held onto & maybe that's a negotiation point? Not feeling well enough to get into any form of possible confrontation at the moment, but there seems no real pressure on them to sell the item either - they've got the asset and half the sales value. May try to get a friend to negotiate on my behalf (though that also involves telling a friend the true nature of my current state of mind & wellbeing).
Thanks again guys. Any further comments are very much appreciated.

To be fair, even if the shop had given you an ultimatum you probably would have shied away from it with your mental health issues.

Dont be afraid of opening up to people though. Often people try to cope with it all themselves and it starts to overwhelm them. Even just having someone to talk to about it can help alleviate that burden and life some weight from your mind. And if your friend thinks any less of you for it, they're not really the type of friend you want in the first place.

You're doing great though - facing up to your mental health issues & this issue you were having too. Its not an easy thing for people to do so you need to give yourself kudos for that (and everything positive you do). Even if all you manage to do in a day is make your bed, focus on that as a positive. If you haven't already then please speak to your GP (or the mental health practitioner if your practice has one) about it and research cognitive behaviour therapy.

Personally, I'd say focus on your mental health - the shop seems to be a good one (a lot of places would try and tell you that you're not entitled to any of it back while this company seems to be sticking to the law) and if you become fixated on this, its likely to exacerbate your anxiety.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Do you have a relative or close friend who could possibly approach the shop keeper on your behalf to explain how ill you have, and ask them if they could perhaps release say, half the deposit now, with the rest to follow if the item is subsequently sold?
