Microsoft critical alert scam

Anyone else getting audio alerts supposedly from Microsoft? The voice says that my computer has alerted Microsoft that my computer is in danger from someone who could hack my computer and steal my facebook login/credit card details etc. it asks me to ring a number and they will 'take me through the steps' to prevent this.
I run Avast and the virus scan keeps coming up clean, so I am assuming this is a scam.

    ^^^ no need

It is just a specially crafted web page (usually a "pop under") that makes its self difficult to close.
Nothing is loaded on your computer, you have no virus or malware.

You usually see these things on "less reputable" sites - such as sites offering streaming of movies, or free software.

To get rid of it, just press ALT and F4 , or use task manager to kill iexplore (or whatever browser you are using)

edit : needless to say - do not call the number
  • Thank you. I didn't think that it was actually doing anything, just inviting me to do something but it is annoying when it keeps coming up. Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a try.
