Moving Logistics

Couldn't really think of a better title to this thread...

I've only ever moved once, into an empty house with no chain so it was easy, we exchanged and I could move my stuff in whenever suited me!

When we put our house on the market, does everyone in the chain normally move at the same time, i.e. on the same day? I can't see how else it would work. If everyone in the chain exchanges monies on the same day then surely everyone must move on the same day?

So party A would move into house B on the same time house B is being moved into house C etc until the end of the chain, all on the same day?

There must be something i'm missing here?

Thanks

  • Some people are happy to break a longer chain by moving into rented to allow (usually the lower) half the chain to progress and to keep things moving if things have stalled.

Usually however most people complete their sale and subseqent purchase on the same day

Yes. Once you've exchanged then you know it's going ahead so you can pack and even load vans ahead of time. Just leave out essentials
    - mattresses, 1 set of linen
    - move day clothes
    - minimal toiletries
    - kettle, tea, coffee, biccies
    - phone, chargers
    - paperwork / solicitor's number

Then on completion day, you load the last bits, get keys to the new place, and unload. Start with finding the things you need immediately before unpacking and setting up other furniture and belongings.
    - bed & 1 set of linen (make bed so when you're tired its ready)
    - clothes for work
    - books for school
    - food for dinner that day

Yes. You usually have to be out of the house you are selling by 1pm (it's specified on the contract). You book the movers once you've exchanged but it's a good idea to get packing before then, or at least have a clear out and get boaxes/ packing materials. Also, you need to clean the house as you move out. So make sure you allow time for that. It's much easier to clean once the rooms are empty.

Personally we packed an over night bag, the duvet and pillows and an 'essentials' (kettle + hot drink stuff, loo roll, cutlery, plates and a few cooking essentials) and a box of cleaning supplied in the car so they are easy to locate on the other side. It might be that the people you are buying off run out of time for cleaning or are plain rude!

No you don't (unless you have agreed to something unusual in your contract). It might be nice to do so, but I'd rather people just got moving. I would expect to clean things to my own standard when I arrive anyway.

Agreed, you have to give vacant possession but there's no obligation to run round with the hoover or anything before you leave.
  • Thanks for the replies all. sounds like a military operation, any idea how much movers cost? Its a 2 bed house with just my wife and I so relatively speaking we won't have a crazy amount of stuff.

    Thanks
  • Found some info. Not as bad as i expected for the nearest company to me
