Letterbox question

Hello,
So just tidying up a couple of thingies around the house. When I recently moved in this is what the inside of the letterbox looks like.

As you can see, the letterbox lid doesn’t close. This is because the brush/bristles around the letter box stick out and don’t let it close.
What should I do with the bristles? Should I just cut them off or do they need bending in, somehow?
Thanks
Z

You could just buy a new letterbox, or seal it up and put a post box in your front yard.
I guess it depends on whether you have another door, to keep in the warmth.0 -

Our letter box is in the garage door. No draughts, no worries.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

I'm amazed you bought the house.Debt 1/1/17 - Credit Cards £17,280.23; overdrafts £3,777.24
Debt 5/1/18 - Credit Cards £3,188; overdrafts £00 -
Thanks all - I guess I was just wondering if I’m just supposed to cut the bristles in the letterbox down or whether I needed to bend them round somehow so they faced upward rather than outwards??0

I would suggest your letter box is designed to fit a thicker door?"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

It's the wrong thing to have fitted in that. Cutting it would be useless.
I'd take it apart, expecting to then have to go down a local DIY/hardware shop to try to get one that's an exact match for size without the bristles... unless there's a way to get the bristles off once I'd taken it apart and looked.0 -
I'd try cutting the bristles and see if it helps. If it does, great. If it doesn't, you can get a new letterbox that fits and you haven't lost anything by trying.0

Take the central 'tube' out. Cut the other end down, so it fits properly. Replace it.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
