EON Exit Fees? Not switching

Hi, I have a query about EON's Exit Fees.
I'm selling my house and may end up completing before we find our new house, so may move in with my Mother-In-Law for a short while. This means we will cancel the supply from EON altogether and not be switching to a new supplier.

My question is does the exit fee apply in this situation?

I've looked at the T&Cs and in the Definitions section it says:
"Exit fee
What you have to pay if you switch to another supplier before your end date."
So that would indicate No.

I've also rung EON and asked them 3 different times, but got different answers. One said no exit fee as they are only if you switch suppliers (as T&Cs) and 2 said the exit fee does apply, even though I quoted the T&Cs Definitions above.

I've only just switched over to this tariff (15th Nov) from another ending EON tariff, so in the 14 days cooling off period. I only moved over to it on what the first person told me - no exit fee applies, otherwise I would have looked for one without (or lower) exit fees. My wife questioned this so I asked EON again to check.

I'm now confused as to if the exit fee will apply or not.
Has anyone been through a similar situation?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Another example of how this isn't "a market" at all... the concept of exit fees being used simply to confuse the consumer and exert an undue influence as a consequence of the resulting worry - the suppliers know that the presence of exit fees (and all the confusion their employees manage to sew, either unintentionally or by design...) means that consumers tend not to exercise their right to swap... for comparison, imagine a market trader trying to tell you he's going to charge you extra for not buying your tomatoes from him this week, 'cos you like the look of the tom.s on his competitor's stall!!...

Unfortunately E.ON's call centre can be, as you've found, a bit hit-and-miss.

    They don't apply when moving.

I'd guess that some of the reps got confused because you can't 'leave' one supplier without switching to another. Technically the property remains on supply with them, but you don't live there any more, and the new occupant isn't subject to the contract you had, just a 'deemed' contract they can immediately switch from.

Their forum reps are good though, so I expect Helena will be along soon enough to clarify.

    Simple answer Hopefully ?

I wondered the same question recently, on checking ONLINE you can change tariff and if it's still the same NO exit fees
But please check the small print on how long you have to stay, may be a slightly higher tariff but better than paying £60 for dual tariff.
    HOPE THIS HELPS ?

  • Why not switch to one of Eon's tariffs that don't have an exit fee the day before you switch? Much easier all round.

I have found similar however I do recall reading they were opening / have opened a new call centre unless I'm mistaken ? It may be old news now I cannot recall how old the topic was I read it in, although I'm not able to quickly find it again. A rep will be able to confirm this I guess. :)

To be completely fair the few occasions I've spoken to them on the phone (including my current things) they have always been really really helpful. :) , its more been a question of "getting through initially" or "to the right person" rather than anything else.

I have had much much worse from other companies (not energy suppliers) so in balance it is I've found once you get ahold of a 'real person' not a mass issue, at least in my limited experience as I've only had a couple of previous conversations with them about a few things over the past few years.

Agree 100% with what you say about the reps too, from random reading of topics they are excellent in what they try to do to assist where they can.

    Good morning Diz_LFC,

Thank you all for your input on the thread :) great to have you guys helping me.

I'm so sorry though Diz_LFC that you've not had a very good time when you've rang us, it's something I'm going to feedback and try and get a message out.

You won't be charged an exit fee when you move house, or if you change from one E.ON tariff to another.

I'm sorry again, but do come to me if you need me. Always more than happy to help as much as I can.

    Thank you

  • Hi Helena, thanks for the reply.

I got through pretty quickly whenever I've rung and the staff I spoke to were very helpful. All went off to ask others in order to make sure. This issue was just the conflicting information given.
Also, there is very little information on the site/FAQs that covers this particular scenario. It covers switching to another supplier, switching to another EON tariff, moving home and taking your tariff with you, but not moving home and not being able to take your tariff with you. Or at least I couldn't find it.
You won't be charged an exit fee when you move house, or if you change from one E.ON tariff to another.
Sorry, just to be absolutely clear: I will pay no Exit Fee if I move home and cannot take my EON tariff with me?

Thanks again for your help, Helena and also thanks to all others for your input.
