Car Insurance if partner is registered owner and keeper

We are buying a near new 2017 car from Motorpoint which has had one previous owner. My partner currently doesn't have a license but the car will be for her once she passes her test which will hopefully be by next summer. I was going to put her name as the owner and registered keeper of the car when we buy it even though I will be driving it initially so that it doesn't lower the value more by having more owners.

Is this a good idea or will the lower value of the car from an additional registered keeper be overwritten by higher insurance premiums?

She won't be driving the car until she has passed her test at which time she will become the main driver with the insurance and I will be just the named driver.

It's second hand, the value wont change by much. Infact the number of owners isn't ever reported. It's the number of RKs.

Why change RKs at all? It makes literally no difference (except who's responsible for the legal aspects of the vehicle)
  • If it makes no difference then that's great and I will just put it in her name.

    Thanks

Unless the insurance company want the policy holder to be the registered keeper.

True, but that's easily checked when insuring.
  • I have put the insurance through comparison sites with my GF as the owner and registered keeper and the insurance quotes I got back look good so I will contact the insurance company before completing on the car to make sure there is o issue.

    Thanks
  • It's nice of you to do this for your GF, but can I just ask - why isn't she making these decisions herself? It's her car - surely she should be responsible for it?

You say she won't be driving the car until she's passed - it would make sense, especially as you're buying it now, for her to practice in it. Also, it's likely cheaper to insure it in her name now, with you as a named driver (premiums tend to go up when you pass your test, as you're no longer supervised). Once she's passed her test, yes the premium will go up but she'll also be however many months closer to getting 1 year's NCD. And after she's passed, her premiums will be lowered a bit by having you as a named driver (assuming you are not also a young/inexperienced driver).
