It's 100% your fault for booking separate tickets.

If you book separate tickets then you run the risk of not being able to catch your onward flight whether it's due to flight changes, delays or cancellations. Dealing with is your problem and yours alone, nobody else's

You could have booked a ticket from Hong Kong to Langkawi with a protected connection through Malaysian or Singapore Airlines and be covered for everything you are complaining about.

You are lucky that you are being offered anything back as most airlines would offer nothing.
