Correct number of NCD Years

I recently renewed my car insurance with Aviva for the second consecutive year after having changed companies almost annually in the past. In the on-line application I selected the maximum 15 year option for the NCD. I have various documents from various past insurers confirming an accumulated total of 27 years NCD - in fact, I have never had to make a claim and in reality have over 50 years NCD. Aviva have rejected my declaration of 15 years NCD and insist I have only 7 years based on the document from my immediately prior insurer - they flat refuse to consider all the earlier documents confirming my 27 years NCD. They say they will not charge any more for their NCD reduction!

I fully appreciate that there will be very little or no difference in premium with an NCD beyond 7 years however I am amazed by the refusal to make the record correct when the documentary evidence has been provided. In order to obtain the best deal in the wider market in the future I would like to have the correct NCD that I am entitled to. I intend exhausting Aviva's complains procedure however I know that ultimately this may have to go to the Ombudsman. Any suggestions how this may be resolved in the meantime ? Thanks to all.

  • That's how it works. The only proof they have is the renewal letter from your current insurer. Different companies have different maximums. Like yourself, I've never had a claim in over 30 years, but with my current insurer, the maximum they'll give is 9 years. Yes, it's a trifle annoying, but that's how the industry works.

In reality, you don't. You have as many years as your current insurer allows, and future insurers are under no obligation to honour even that.

Since it makes no difference beyond about 7, there is absolutely no point in getting aerated about it.

I would say that it is your previous insurance company that you should be pursuing for this information to be updated

Aviva will be working on the information that they have received from your previous insurer and is not really their job chasing them for further information

would i bother if it was me probably not as it will be a lot of hastle for little or no gain

Don't bother. It won't make any difference to your insurance premiums anyway.

The maximum NCD you actually get is usually 5 years. Maybe 4 or 6 for some companies. After that, it's just bragging rights and makes no difference to anything. If you do make a claim, your NCD will go down as if it was at the maximum that they make a discount for. So if their maximum is 5 years, and you make one claim, it will go down to 3.

Also, if your previous company said you have 7 years, then that's what you have. It doesn't matter whether you have made a claim or not, your NCD was 7 years.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

You have maximum NCD. The maximum that any individual insurer will recognise varies - it's that simple.

I disagree.... keeping an ongoing "official" record of NCD is something I've been doing through my last several insurance companies, even when they don't recognise it as over x,y, or z for pricing.

They all have so far gone off the previous company's letter of 10, 12, whatever years-worth, and given me a letter on request for the true number. It can and does make a difference on comparison sites, if you only put 7 yrs NCD in, compared to 15 yrs.

I think, regardless of the years of discount, they should automatically provide proof of the real number on your renewal notice. Admiral do this as a matter of course, but I don't recall any others what have without asking for it specifically.

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • I agree with GunJack and have found diferences in premium between 15 years claimed NCD and just 5 Years.

I had the same issue with the number of years I've held a driving licence. I passed my test in 1963, but the insurance company only allows up to 15 years.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
