Cheap - nice tasting red wine ?

Well, I'm a beer and wine loving lass although I've also cut back on the former as I do less sport later in life. I've been educating my previous non-drinking girlfriend about wine, and her palate has developed very quickly! :-)
It depends what you mean by cheap, but although I'm happy to find cheaper bargains the better value is found by paying a little bit more. Around here a couple of pints of decent ale in an ordinary pub will be £7+, so I reckon that's a reasonable aim.
You're better off going for cheap reds as decent whites are more difficult to make and cheap ones often need more sulphites which will give you a head.
I'd second the recommendation of the discounters as they have some interesting and good wines at times, although some of Lidl's regulars can be a bit boring. having said that I was pleasantly surprised by a lidl cheap red South African which I bought for cooking and made the chef happy as I obviously had to test it!
So only you know your own taste, so have a bit of fun trying some different ones. With other people involved you get to try more different ones. :-) Oh, and I'd also recommend having nibbles or food with most red wines: try having your cheese before the meal with a glass instead of after, as it goes with the wine and may help cut your calories.
Have fun!0 -
Gallo Merlot is quite drinkable and about £6 a bottle in Sainsbury's, Tesco etc.
But if it's weightloss you're after I'd recommend (from experience;)) several alcohol free days a week and then spirits with low calorie mixers when you fancy a drink.0 -
My favourite "cheap" red wine is the Co-op Argentine Malbec - £4.99 a bottle.

Oh and Aldi do a very enjoyable Argentinian Malbec which I think is around £50 -
My latest gem is Tesco Finest Montepulciano D'abruzzo 75Cl at £6.500
