You could do worse than trying the Lidl weekend offer (there always seems to be one on vino!). That at least fulfils the cheap criteria.

As for nice-tasting, thats where my advice ends. Red wines all taste like paint-stripper to me.

Barefoot Merlot about £7 well worth trying.

    It's subjective.
What one person likes, someone else won't.
We drink a fair amount of red wine but I couldn't really recommend one to someone who's a newby to wine.

We do like the Barefoot range, we drink Pinot Grigio (white).

Any reason why red rather than white?

Wine is not dissimilar to beer when counting calories and alcohol units:
pint of 4% beer 2.3 units 182 calories
175ml glass of wine (13%) 2.3 units and 159 calories.

So the only thing with drinking wine instead of beer is less volume of liquid.

A 25ml shot of spirit (40%) has 1 alcohol unit and 61 calories.

Agree that individual taste makes definite suggestions difficult! However...

In the descriptions, look for 'fruity', 'berry', 'blackcurrant' rather than 'oaky', 'aged', 'tannin' - the fruity ones are usually easier to start with (and the Shiraz varieties normally do well here).

Don't go too cheap, the way taxes are applied in the UK means that under 50p of a £5 bottle is spent on the wine, but £1.50 on a £7.50 bottle...

    Hope that helps!

Wolf Blass Yellow Label Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent good value Australian screw top.

    Tesco £8.00
    Sainsbury £7.00
    Asda £7.98
    Morrisons £9.00 (boo !!)

Many people are snobbish about cheap Merlots but I did find that they can taste a bit like fruit juice.

However St Emillion is a wonderful red and is a blend that includes the Merlot grape so I guess there is no way of telling until you drink some. The best price on any St Emilion will be about £12.00 and it will need to be opened an hour before drinking to allow it to breathe.

A premier or grand cru St Emilion is fabulous.
Lidl have a grand cru at £10.99 and Aldi at £9.99 (reduced from £11.99).

    However, Tesco are doing this:
2016 Montagne Saint Emilion AOC. Appellation Montagne St. Emilion Controlee. Product of France. Grand Vin de BordeauxMerlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have been harvested from vineyards on the right bank of Bordeaux's Gironde estuary. This smooth, full bodied red wine has been carefully blended to obtain the typical blackcurrant, cedar wood and savoury spice flavours of Montagne Saint Emilion. This wine brings out the best in roasted red meats, pork and light game.
It's in their Finest range and is a really good price at 2 for £12.00 until 20/11 (she types putting her coat on to pop to Tesco :D).

Our favourite red wine is Beaune.
Aldi have one at £16.99 - which doesn't fit the OP's criteria of 'cheap'.

I agree that Lidl/Aldi are the places for value.

Lidl's special this weekend is a £2.99 South African white

The 23-26 Nov offer is a £2.99 Australian Chardonay

So no reds on the horizon at the moment
