Hi all,
I have an Astra H 2006 diagnosed head gasket failing/failure. It had the symptoms, losing coolant with no obvious sign of leak, white smoke out of exhaust, mayo on oil cap etc...
Anyway pressure tested today confirmed no leak but hydro carbon test failed indicating exhaust fumes in coolant.
Quoted just over £1,000 for repair for head gasket including chain, tensioner and ancilarys. Is this a fair price ? I have no reason to suspect its not I'm just asking.
Also, I've heard K-Seal could work temporarily but also that it can create more problems ? The car has been great historically and I've not had to shed out loads on it so at the moment I'm airing on the side of just taking the hit and giving it some TLC. But on the other hand, if K-Seal can give me another 6 to 12 months then that to could be a good option.
Any suggestions? Thanks

No £1000 is ridiculous. Head gasket issues are usually a £300-£500 job. Doing the chain at the same time adds an hour or so labour plus parts so a generous £150.
K seal isn't a guarantee, it is supposed to be a get you home fix, not a long term solution. It can cause more problems by blocking galleys.
If there's nothing else wrong with the car one way to look at it was if you were to sell the car what would you be able to get for the combined cost of what you'd get as it is plus what the repairs would cost? In other words what would £500-£1000 get you? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
