Item IS 'as described'

So had a buyer say an item they purchased from me has a faulty zip. It was fine when I checked it for listing. So told them that but offered a return (buyer to pay postage).

They weren't happy so escalated to ebay to get free return postage on basis of 'not as described' who of course said yes.

I fully expected the item back with the zip now deliberately broken to find it works fine.

Do you think its worth reporting to ebay - more on the principle than the postage costs?? Are they likely to do anything?

You can report but they are unlikely to do anything if it is just a one off. It is still worth it though. As if they do it a lot and everyone reports them, then eventually, hopefully Ebay will review their account.
