Parking outside the house

Hi there,
An incident occurred today where the shopkeeper next door to my mum's house has told me that she owns the road outside her shop and that I'm not allowed to park there anymore. We have lived there for 28 years and never heard of this before. There are no signs etc. I have a 92 year old grandmother who lives there and we require 24/7 access. Can anyone advise if she is correct? I have a picture from street view but I'm not sure how to upload it.

As long as there are no road markings or street signs to indicate otherwise ( "Residents Only", "Reserved Bay" etc. ) then the shopkeeper is talking rubbish. No-one "owns" the road - well, the council do, but you know what I mean. Ask the shopkeeper to prove that she owns that portion of road. It's possible that the shopkeeper has actually paid for a reserved spot outside their shop, but that would be clearly marked.


Of course, if there are yellow lines or signs restricting parking, then that's a different matter.


My only worry would be - if the shopkeeper is feeling malicious, and you park there ... you may well come out one morning to find your car damaged, with no way of proving who did it

Unless its a private road (unlikely for a shop) nobody can claim to own the road in front of their property. I would politely tell shop keep to do one.

If it is a public highway, then the shop doesn't own it.
If it is unadopted, possible if it is one of those little tracks that you bounce along that are spurred off the public highway, then someone owns it, and the shopkeeper could be right.
I daresay that you could check the status of the road with your council.

If you've got a street view link then just change the http to hxxp and post it.

There is definitely no signage, I said to her there are no signs about a parking restriction.
Unfortunately, we juggle care for grandmother and there is no other parking.

It doesn't work. Just give use the name of the shop and postcode if you want. On second thoughts, don't bother, I'm not sure your mum would want you to give out her address on a public forum.

As stated if it's a public road with no restrictions then the shop keeper is talking BS and you should just ignore him.

Tell the shopkeeper that his (?) direction regarding parking is illegal and is obstructing care services for your mum and you are considering distributing this information via local media and neighbours. This will obviously impact upon his custom: would he like to think again?
