  • What is the UK law on returning items to stores?

I keep getting told I have to accept a refund onto a GC even though I paid directly from a CC or DC.

Also, if I pay with a GC can I have the refund returned to my bank account?

Finally, I was obliged by a high stree retailer to accept a refund onto a GC even though I paid from my bank account - is this allowed?

We need a lot more info.

    why was the item returned?

Unless the item was damaged or not fit for purpose, retailers dont need to accept returns at all, and if they do they can set their own terms and conditions, such as only refunding on to gift cards.

Yea, need a few more bits of information..

    1. What is the reason for the return? Ie have you simply changed your mind, or is there something wrong with the item?

    2. Where did you purchase the item from? Was it purchased online or in store?

You see, if it is simply a "change of mind" return then pretty much EVERYTHING you return to a physical store is relying on their goodwill more than anything else.... They will naturally want you to spend the goodwill refund in their store, so will issue a credit note. AND if you bought it online then they are going above and beyond by accepting the return in-store, as you technically have to send it back to the online part of the company (EDIT: But you have additional rights if you buy items online and return them online, so you have a small window to change your mind)

As said you have no rights to just return an item .
The goodwill of many stores allow you xx days to return . Refund is subject to their terms .
I buy a jacket from xx high st store .
Its damaged its covered under Consumer Law .
I dont like it tough you bought it and any returns are down to the retailer not the law .

The OP's edited the first post to say that the clothes were bought online and don't fit (I'm pointing it out because I hardly ever re-read the first post so people might miss it).

Under distance selling regulations you have 14 days to return for any reason. Is it outside this time?
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

If it was purchased online then you need to follow the proper returns procedure as some that accept returns in store only do so by giving a gift card.

This does not affect your statutory rights because by buying online you have distance selling rule now called CCR. But to use these rights, stores such as Sports direct only allow you to use these rights if you follow the law regarding returns, they will accept return to store but for credit only.

Who is the retailer in question, we will soon get to the bottom of it for you as most people just think they only need to return it to get a full refund, this isn't always the case.

    .

    Exactly this.

I bought something online but checked the returns policy prior to ordering and found out that if I returned it to a store, the refund would be made onto a gift card (wasn't SD btw)
  • What was the website that you purchased from?
They might not even be a UK or EU based retailer.
