Anyone Ever Get A Call From 0048

Yes, that is what my caller display showed 0048 even 1471 said 0048, of course I did not answer. About 30 minutes a call came which showed the usual Out Of Area again I never answer.

Really weird number never knew such a short number would go through to actually working.

What you see on the caller display screen is merely a "presentation number" programmed by the caller's telecoms provider - or by the caller if they have the right equipment to do that. Therefore, caller display can never guarantee to identify who is calling.

There are several uses for caller display. When a call is received that originated from a normal domestic landline or consumer mobile, the information will usually show the caller's actual number, unless they have opted to withhold their number. Alternatively, when a call is received that originated from a large outbound callcentre, the number shown will not be the one for the individual line that made the call. Instead, caller display will show a central inbound number for the organisation, usually a non-geographic 03 or 08 number. It is illegal for a premium rate number to be offered.

When scammers call, they may program the displayed number to be one for a well-known organisation (such as a bank, when they are pretending to be calling from that bank), a number within the local area code of whoever they are calling (in the hope that people are more receptive to answering calls from local numbers), numbers with a valid area code but with too many or not enough digits to be a valid number, numbers within area codes that do not exist, or random digits and junk entries. Caller display cannot ever be relied on to identify who is calling.

Clever scammers change the displayed number after each call made. This renders call-blockers based solely on processing caller display information, completely useless.

The only effective remedy is a call-blocker that issues a verbal challenge to all unknown callers - this includes the plug-in trueCall units, handsets such as the BT "Call Guardian" 8500 and 8600 series handsets, BT "Halo" handsets and the "Sky Shield" system which is built in to the phone network itself.
