energy saving devises

I have been reading up on savaplugs, which you use on your fridgefreezers to apparently save up to 30%. Someone else says that they do not save that much and they wear out the motor quicker. Any opinions?

AFAIK the recommended way to save energy with your fridge/freezer is to turn its thermostat(s) to as high a temperature as you can without your food spoiling. I don't know about these "savaplugs" though!

If you have a 40ish year old fridge or freezer savaplugs might have some marginal advantage.

Manufacturers design their equipment now to incorporate those advantages. They get more sales if their appliances are more economical!

If you think they might work, ring up or write to your fridge/freezer manufacturer and ask their advice. You will get a resounding rasberry.

It is difficult to explain the reasons unless you understand electrical theory and in particular 'Power Factor'.

You have a situation in houses where you can use more power - termed 'volt amps' - than 'watts'. These devices correct that situation by adjusting what is termed the Power factor' to bring the 'volt amps' closer to watts.

However the point is that for a domestic customer it doesn't matter what volt amps you use, as you only pay for the watts you use(actually kWh)

That is over-simplified but the bottom line is they will save you nothing.
