Toilet wont flush properly

The past 2-3 weeks our toilet has been acting up. You'll go to flush it and it just wont but it'll make noise like it's filling up with water. Once it stops doing that & you flush again - then it'll flush properly. It's gradually getting worse.
Any idea of what's going on with it & how to fix?

Split syphon plastic, it basically should lift the water up and create a syphonic action that draws up the water and flusher it down the pan, the split is letting enough water fall back down - and air in - so that a syphon action doesn't take place. You have to pump the handle to flush it, and it will get worse until only a very small quantity of water will go down the pan. You need a new diaphragm washer which are about £1, but the fitting isn't easy. Alternatively fit a new flush ...

This one £4.74 from toolstation. Unfortunately with only a few exceptions this repair will require splitting the cistern from the pan - usually a job for a plumber or a skilled DIY'er.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0 -
That rules me out then. I don't even meet the requirement of basic.Mr.Generous wrote: »or a skilled DIY'er.
We had to have someone out in about 2014/2015 to fix the toilet. It used to flush but make an almighty racket as it did it. It's been fine until now.0 -
Looking at the pics its likely the replaced the (grey/black) inlet valve then - not touched the Syphon.
That type of inlet valve tends to be a bit quieter and has an almost instant switch off compare to the old type that would just get slower and slower as they filled.0 -

It is not difficult to replace the syphon diaphragm and even a totally non skilled DIYer should be able to do this easily! Definitely no plumber or special tools required.
The serated blue ring shown in the second picture is simply undone to easily remove the part of the siphon where the diaphragm is fitted.
Search on Google for "metro+3+part+syphon" if you are not familiar with this syphon and all should become clear.0 -
If its a split syphon its really easy, sorry didn't realise it was. When you have to take cistern off its a much harder job.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0

Well i didn't really know what i was doing anyway. I usually find a way of botching a DIY job & having to call out the professionals. My wife got a friend of a friend who's a plumber to do it. 10-15 minutes later it was fixed. Cost me £20 but at least nothing further was broken and the house wasn't flooded unlike what probably would've happened if i'd attempted it.0
