New E7 setup (coming from complex metering)

Hi, finally almost there, getting rid of the pricy complex metering. EDF are coming out soon to remove my 24hrs meter and fit an E7. Then sometime after that, remove my second deemed off peak meter that switches on for up to 10 hours a day. Of course I need some sort of timer for when I loose this meter.

Currently I have two meters doing:
Deemed off peak meter/E10: Feeds Consumer Unit with underfloor heating and Immersion heater

24hrs meter:runs the CU that does everything else

I have fitted timers for the underfloor and immersion heater, I want EDF to fit a E7 meter which will provide 24hrs supply to BOTH Consumer Units. So, at 11.30pm (or whenever) the WHOLE house gets the "cheap" electric. If needed, I can then use the immersion heater on booster during the daytime.

Does this seem ok?

I think you are missunderstanding how it works.

It sounds like you have an old "white meter" system where you had 2 completely separate meters and the off peak meter only metered what was used by the storage heaters etc.

With E7 (or E10 on a modern meter) the whole house gets metered at the cheap rate during the off peak times. Then during the cheap rate times a switched output is energised that feeds the off peak consumer units feeding storage heaters etc so you don't need any timers, that is done by the supply companies switch now built into the dual rate meters.

So leave your off peak consumer unit and let them connect it correctly.

P.S. If your under floor heating is "real time" not a storage system, then the E10 tariff suits it much better as you get a cheap rate period in the afternoon / early evening., E7 would let you eat the floor cheap overnight but that is unlikely to be enough and of you need more heat it would be at the peak rate.

Hi, yes the off peak CU is staying, I'm sure EDF said the whole house gets E7. So, are you saying the off peak CU will only come on at night? Is there no way to get both CUs live 24/7?

You can feed both CU's from the always on output of the meter, and then do your own timing, but that's not the normal way to do it and the meter monkey will need specific instructions to do it that way. You have to then be sure your timer is in sync with the suppliers timer or some of it will be charged at the peak rate.

I have just had another thought, can you post a picture of your electricity meter(s) and consumer units please as they are at the moment.

You just use a Henley (splitter) block, one tail from the meter into the block and a tail out to each CU.

Ok, so, WORST case, if EDF refuse, my sparks can do it?

Yes that is the old "white meter" system, obviously quite old, though nice shiny new consumer units. And with that it is only the off peak CU that gets the cheap rate so well worth upgrading.

Yes ask the EDF guy if he will connect both CU's to the always on output. If he won't because it's "not normal" then any qualified electrician can change it over for you, it's not a big job. But wait until after you have the new meter fitted.

Thanks mate, the shiny new CUs were done few months back. I have paid out for 3 digi timers for each underfloor heating circuit and a digi timer/spur for the immersion.

In fact you can see the timers on the bottom of the cupboard. They are now fitted.
