Car Tax Renewal Reminder Question

Hi :j

I wonder if anybody can help me with a question I have about car tax.

My husband and I normally pay our car tax yearly. We pay this in one lump sum at the post office. This year, due to having a £600 car repair bill, we decided to only pay 6 months. We did this by ticking the 6 month option on the renewal letter and paying at the post office.

We always receive a reminder that our car tax is due by post. Great, as I like paying at the post office and don't want to do direct debits.

Will I get a reminder when the 6 months is up? Or will I have to go in to the post office and fill in a form? It is due on January 1st 2018, so I have plenty of time, but with Xmas want to make sure i get it paid in time.

Anyone had any experience of paying 6 months worth of car tax or any suggestions what I should do? The renewal letter was so simple to take in to the post office as it had all the car details on it etc, but I'm not sure if they send one when the 6 months is up. Hope this makes sense. :rotfl:

Question: Does the DVLA send out reminders for 6 months VED renewal?

Plus get an MOT reminder as well https://www.gov.uk/mot-reminder
  • They send out reminders. Don't rely on actually receiving it though, I've had more than one go astray in the post until I moved all of my vehicles onto annual payment by direct debit.

DD means not needing to worry about reminders or the 30 minutes queue to get served in the post office.

Any particular reason? Your life must be considerably more expensive as a result of this foible.
  • You can pay online without using direct debit as well, saves having to go to the post office.

It works out cheaper to pay it annually, rather than by direct debit. I believe monthly direct debit payments cost 5 per cent more than paying yearly.

So does six-monthly, a reduction from the old 10%.
