mercedes benz e class service

Options
Just gone to the official site - they are quoting around £890 for full service -

Just went to a generic garage site and they offering around £200 -

Is this about right for a non official garage?

What are the differences? Or is it just because its 'mercedes' ?

Thanks,

p.s. (anyone know of any good/reputable garages in he East London area?)

How do we know the difference? Are you comparing like for like on the sites? You could be getting quoted for all sorts of things or just an oil change, we have no idea. Go back and have a look at what each includes.

Main dealer, independent specialist, national chain (kwik fit/halfords etc) and general garage are the normal options. All will have different prices but it wont always be like for like. Main dealer and independent specialists will stick to the correct service schedule as specified by the manufacturer. The others will probably just to a normal fluids and filters service.

If your car is still under warranty then stick to the main dealer or a specialist. £890 sounds high though.

Depending on the age of the car I would either go with main dealer if in warranty or independent specialist if not.
Try asking on a MB owners club forum for garage recommendations.

MB will use genuine MB service parts: filters, oil, brake parts, etc. These will be very much more expensive than the 'pattern' parts used by an independent. These will be perfectly fine and suitable for the task, but will not carry the MB logo. Their labour charges will also be considerably higher and they will perhaps take longer, without using the (non-dangerous) faster work that an independent works with.

The MB workshop employs people on a higher regular income who may be forced to follow a set routine, the independent works with many different makes and models and has to know them all. They have to work harder and faster to earn their money and keep their place of employment in work.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
  • I got a service for my Civic Type R last year at £650, this year was £99. Same garage.

There are far too many variables to answer your question

Think I might still to around £220 with a garage after seeing and comparing what they actually do in a full service.
  • You need to know which service. The 3 year service is an expensive one for example as they change certain fluids and replace some other goodies. Some auto boxes need their oil changing.

You need to know if the alternative service is attempting to replicate a full Mercedes compatible service or not.

Also, I found on mine (a C220 Cdi BlueEfficiency) that the actual service schedule differed from the rough guide published due to different components of the BE version.

I used to have an E class and the more detailed major service was around £750 at the main dealer where I purchased it. You will find that even main dealers, many of them being franchises have varying prices.
  • I'd add that at my independent, he often used Mercedes parts as the independent parts weren't much cheaper or were identifiably worse. Also, he could access the Mercedes and BMW systems and do a service that did not invalidate the warranty. He wasn't that massively cheaper when servicing to spec as opposed to when I had an older car and I changed to a basic level of servicing rather than to spec.

The other thing to bear in mind is that an annual service with Mercedes will give you European wide breakdown cover (to quite a high spec including home start) so that's worth a few quid.
