Charges against your House

I am hoping some of the Money saving experts here can help me with something I was told today.
I have fairly large unsecured debt with various creditors which I am paying via "Payplan" this is a debt management company who are sponsored by the FSA, and all monies paid to them go directly to the creditors. So no fees.
I received a letter today from a company of Solicitors representing Nat West. They stated that I owed £13k and must pay this in 7 days or i may be subject to a money judgement from the county court (CCJ)
I telephoned them and spoke with a representative who told me that unless i pay them in 7 days they will look to make a charge against my property.
To say I was knocked sideways is an understatement.
Especialy as I have always paid and never missed a payment, so therefore, am not refusing to pay.
The debt is unsecured.
My house is in joint names so how can they make a charge?
My question, (finally, i hear you ask) is Can they actually do that and what can i do to prevent it. _pale_
Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

Anyone can take a charge against your property BUT to enforce it they must go to court.
It won't make a blind bit of difference if you intend to fully repay and stay at the property until this has been done but does raise complications should you want to sell or even re-mortgage.
I suggest you get proper legal advice.0 -

Makes sense.
Get some proper (paid for) legal advice.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

I'm sorry, I don't apologise. That's just the way I am. Homer (Simpson)0
